Summer is right around the corner! What should you do if your air conditioner isn’t running properly? Here are some troubleshooting tips for common cooling questions.
Your thermostat is calibrated incorrectly
Make sure your thermostat is set to cool. If it is the beginning of the season, your thermostat may still be set to heat mode. Try setting the temperature 2-4 degrees below the room temperature reading.
The circuit breaker tripped
Try resetting it.
Clean/replace the filters
Filters can get clogged and prevent cool air from circulating. We recommend changing your air filters at least once per season.
You’re low on freon
A properly functioning A/C won’t require you to replace freon. If you do need to replace the freon, you most likely have a refrigerant leak. Make sure you have an expert inspect your unit so they can find and repair the leak. Leaks that go unrepaired will require you to constantly replace the freon and this can be expensive.
Mold/bacteria build up
If your A/C unit blows foul-smelling air, it’s most likely caused by mold and bacteria on your evaporator coil. If the smell does not dissipate, we recommend you have your evaporator coil cleaned by a professional. Other solutions to this issue include checking your filters, cleaning the drain pan and checking your ductwork.
Your air conditioner can’t keep up. Create climate zones.
A simple way to rectify this situation is to close a few vents (not all) on the first floor. This will cause your cooling system to redirect more air upstairs. You can also take it one step further and have an HVAC professional install a climate zoning system. This will allow you to control where heated or cooled air is directed. This issue could also be a sign that you current unit is too small for the size of your home. If this is the case, you should consider installing a new air conditioner or a ductless system to cool single rooms.
Clean or replace your filters
Dust and dirt will collect on your filter screen, restricting airflow to your home.
Your system is running too much
Setting your thermostat to a temperature that is drastically lower than the outside temperature will cause your system to work harder to maintain that temperature. This can result in a higher utility bill. Try adjusting your thermostat to a temperature that’s more conservative.
Your air conditioner is not efficient
If your air conditioner is more than 10 years old or has a SEER rating of 10 or less, you’re probably spending additional money each month on energy costs. Today’s air conditioners have energy saving features that allow them to cool your home effectively while running on less energy.
If none of these options resolve your A/C issues, it may be time to call in a professional. Many A/C problems can be prevented with an annual maintenance.
