Summer is in full swing and 4th of July weekend is right around the corner! Lots of us will be gathering with family and friends for holiday festivities like firework displays and cookouts. Here are some tips to keep you cool at your backyard barbecue while also conserving energy.
Prepare a Majority of Your Food Outside
If you can, utilize an outdoor grill at your barbecue. Hamburgers, hot dogs and corn on the cob are all picnic favorites that can be grilled outside. If you’re serving food inside, people will constantly be coming in and out of your house. This will let out the air conditioning and make it difficult for your system to maintain a cool temperature.
Close the Blinds
Keep the blinds closed in rooms that are not in use. Most of your guests will be enjoying time outside anyway, so there is no use having the hot summer sun stream through every window in your house. This will help keep your home cool and will not put additional stress on your air conditioning unit.
Invest in Portable Fans
Portable fans can be found for relatively cheap at local hardware stores and most people already have one or two in their home. Utilize these at your barbecue to ensure your guests stay cool and comfortable.
Stay Hydrated
Make sure you and your guests are drinking plenty of water and staying hydrated. It’s recommended to consume between 16 fl oz and 32 fl oz of water per hour while spending time outdoors.
