Smells coming out of your furnace can indicate some serious issues that should be attended to right away to ensure the safety of your family and the furnace itself. There are three scents in particular you should pay special attention to.
1.) Rotten Eggs Odor: If you encounter an odor that smells like rotten eggs, you should act immediately as this is an indicator of a natural gas leak in the system. Open your doors and windows right away to let in fresh air and evacuate the house. Once you are at a safe distance, call 9-1-1 and then your gas company.
2) A Burning Electrical or Metallic Smell: An electrical or metallic burning order is often a sign that your furnace’s blower motor may be seizing. If your system’s blower motor does seize, the motor will use excessive voltage which will cause it to overheat. The overheating would then in turn cause the wires within your system to melt, which is an electrical hazard. If you smell a burning electrical odor in your home, you should turn off your furnace immediately using your thermostat and have it looked it at by a qualified heating and cooling technician.
3.) Chemical Aroma: If you smell something that is similar to chemical formaldehyde, your system may have a cracked heat exchanger. This is a very serious issue because a cracked exchanger can allow carbon monoxide fumes to be circulated through the duct work in your home. Being exposed to carbon monoxide can cause serious injury and even death.
